I Smell Smut is a pet project that focuses on celebrity gossip, hearsay, rumours, photos, videos and other tidbits that we’ve collected second hand. We stake no claim to the authenticity or factuality of any of our writing and neither should you. We do not have “reliable sources”, “journalistic integrity” or “tact” so please don’t call us out on that because it’s true and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.

It seems so much easier to write about someone else than it is to write about yourself. About me? Hmmmm. Well, I guess I could start by saying that I have always loved Hollywood gossip. And I have come by it naturally. I remember when I was a little girl that both of my grandmas always read the “junk mags”, as my mom used to say (hi mom!). And when they were done reading them, I couldn’t wait to scoop them up and look at all the pictures of the beautiful stars and read about all the scandal. Then, at my first office job when I was 17, the women ordered People Magazine to keep in the lunch room. And we would spend our lunch hours flipping through the glossy pages declaring our love or hate for those that live their lives out on those pages. Please. I lived for it. Then a couple of years ago, Tanya and I discovered that we both loved Hollywood gossip…more than the average person. And I can’t really remember how it came about but we decided that we should have our own blog. I guess the rest, you would say, is history.
Some things that you probably need to know about me?
- I’m judgmental. And I am the more mean-spirited of the two of us. You will probably find me hating on people a lot more than Tanya. I try to be mindful of it and often regret some of the things I say but I am working on being less mean.
- I have a particularly uncanny ability to remember every little detail about everyone; who has dated who, who was in what movie with who, etc. I am the person you call when you can’t remember the name of that movie who had that actress in it who dated that musician. All those years of reading “junk mags” has allowed me to accumulate a lot of useless, random information that I have stored up ready to whip it out at a moment’s notice.

I started reading celebrity gossip as a way to kill time at work. Don’t lie, you’re at work right now while you’re reading this aren’t you? I soon realized that I was not alone in this hobby as friends and co-workers started to email and IM me major events like “OMG! Did you see what Britney Spears just did to her hair?” and “Heath Ledger just died. Seriously.” and so began an ongoing conversation. Gossip is way more fun shared openly, IMO, which is why I prefer the blog to email gossip – if you’ve got something to say, why not share it with everyone?
You’ll notice that I try to not hate on people too much. It’s hard sometimes because some people are just so awful that it’s hard to say anything nice, but because I don’t actually know any of these celebs I like to think that maybe they’re just like you and me and we all have bad fashion days, bad hair days and bad boyfriends, but I also think that as a public figure you know that the camera is on 24/7 and you should at least try to pretend you’ve got your sh*t together.

Books I’m reading: Currently reading Jane Eyre so I can check out the new movie adaptation with Mia Wasikowska.
