February 28th, 2011Random ScentI have a hard time watching award shows because it’s mostly just a bunch of people blowing smoke up other peoples’ asses. That and the fact that there are 1,254,654,899 awards shows for the exact same things so they’re all kinda meaningless.
But, if you choose to participate you should at least smile and put on a good face. James Franco was totally over the Oscars 5 minutes after they started and he still put on a smile when they announced his name for a category he had very little chance of winning. Helena Bonham Carter – no dice. She rolled her eyes, scrunched her face and told the guy next to her to stop clapping for her. Awkward. Even more awkward than Marky Mark not clapping was HBC telling other people not to clap. From what I’ve seen of her performance (the clips of the movies they showed at the Oscars last night) she looked like she did a pretty good job. She shouldn’t sell herself short on that.
But instead she did this and it made me kinda uncomfortable:

As much as we love/hate on people for what they wore at events, I totally agree with Helena Bonham Carter on this one:“I am not Hannibal Lecter wearing someone else’s skin. Why does it matter? I make do with what is in my wardrobe. I think one should but I receive comments that that’s not good enough. I think one can wear the same thing, in this day and age especially. There are too many awards, no other profession gets so many. There are millions of people who deserve awards. That’s what I have a problem with and the fact it’s now hijacked by the fashion industry – it’s all what you wear,” she said.
I agree that there are too many awards and that the whole thing has been hijacked by the fashion industry. I also agree that she should be able to make due with what she has in her closet (like Christian Bale) instead of buying a new dress every time (but let us be honest here, most of those dresses are on loan from the designers because this is how you get your name out there as a designer).
However, even if you’re working with what you’ve got you can still make it look put together. You can brush your hair for instance. Or wear the clean shoes instead of the dirty ones. And I don’t watch every single outfit that she wears to events, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her re-wear a dress. Most times it looks like she had her outfits custom tailored for that event for her specific “style” which might be even more wasteful and indulgent than the size 00 girls who borrow an Alexander McQueen dress for the night and return it tomorrow.
I get what Helena Bonham Carter is saying, and I totally agree with it, but I don’t think she’s as on-board with it as she says.
What I would really like in exchange for fashion at awards shows is to get all the good smut instead – who was flirting with who, who was puking at the after party, who was pissed that they didn’t win, etc. But that will never happen. If anything, most celebs probably like that the focus is on the fashion so they don’t have to talk about themselves too much.
Stacey: Ya, I think that what she is saying is great in theory but I don’t think she is adhering to it. Clearly the stuff she wears is designed specifically for her. Its not like she is finding that stuff at a thrift store. And more over, the get-up she wore at the Globes required 2 of the exact same shoe but in different color…to me that seems that 2, perfectly good shoes are being left somewhere, unused. If that is not wasteful, then I don’t know what is. Maybe she donates all these crazy creations to good will afterwards?

January 18th, 2011Random ScentAnother person that has been getting a lot of attention for her Golden Globes attire is Helena Bonham Carter. Tanya and I have often wondered if the way she dresses is put on or if this is exactly who she is.
Its hard to put her on the worst dressed list because its not as if this is a one time miss. She always looks like this; a little crazy, kinda unnerving, and, as my husband says, like she just ate a bug sandwich.
But do we love it or hate it? Me? I love it. In a sea of talentless actresses who all desire to be the same size and wear carbon copies of the same dresses, here is someone who is wildly talented, actually incredibly beautiful, not size “00″, and rocks whatever the hell she feels like wearing. Is it weird? Sure. Is it totally awesome? Yes.
So for not conforming, for being who she wants to be, whether it is put on or not, I totally love HBC. Plus, did you see her bitch face at the Golden Globes during Natalie Portman’s fontrum inducing speech? Mad love.
Below is a picture of her looking semi normal at the BAFTA luncheon.
Tanya: A bug sandwich? What does that even mean? Are you trying to say she looks poor (can’t afford some ham), she’s incredibly patient (who would take the time to collect enough bugs for a sandwich?) or that she’s just incredibly weird?
This outfit doesn’t bother me at all. Her shoes might be different colours but they still match each other in style and both match the dress. It works for me.
The talk about Helena Bonham Carter (I can’t bring myself to call her HBC) always dressing kookie to maintain that persona reminds me of something Dita Von Teese said a while back (I can’t find it) along the lines of “I wear full make-up and dress the role everywhere I go because that’s the image that I’m selling. I’ve worked so hard to create the pin up girl look that to wear some sweats to the gym or let me roots grow out would be counter productive” (that’s a really rough recollection of what she said, but I think it was the general idea. So maybe Helena feels the same way – if people see her with brushed hair and in a pair of sneakers with the kids at the park they’ll forget how crazy she is supposed to be.

Here’s Helena Bonham Carter at the London premier of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and I’m tempted to say she looks less crazy than usual, but then again, she still looks absolutely crazy. I also can’t quite figure out if she gets herself intentionally styled like this (“no dear, I said make the hair a little bit curly, a little bit straight, back comb part of it then mess it all up like I’ve lived in a cave for 15 years”) or if it just happens to be the most ridiculous hair on the face of the planet so she just put a little clip in the front to keep some of it out of her face. The outfit is cute though. I get the impression that she’s trying to look a little less “dark and troubled” for this premier. Maybe it’s because she’s been getting some buzz for The King’s Speach and she wants to seem a little more… approachable.
Stacey: Remember when Helena used to be concidered hot? When she was in Fight Club and in Maxim? I thnk she is gorgeous. And just super kooky. When you are rich, famous, artistic you can be pretty much any way you want. She’s interesting, thats for sure.

I’m fairly sure that Tim Burton & Helena Bonham Carter have hired the costumer that does Tim Burton’s movies. Where else would you buy clothes like this? HBC’s frock is definitely a custom piece and that hat is not sold in stores.Do you think she owns any sweats or jeans? Something to wear to the park without frightening the other children?

Here’s Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Sheen, Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter premiering Alice in Wonderland in Paris.According to the cast it’s ‘kid friendly’ and Helena says her 2yr old didn’t find it scary at all, and Johnny Depp said his kids (Lily-Rose & Jack) “loved every character. They weren’t freaked out by it whatsoever.” I don’t know how much I trust these guys kids. I’ve seen how Helena and Tim dress on a daily basis (same as these photos but more black) so they’re probably not afraid of much.
That said, what’s up with Helena Bonham Carter’s shoes? Did she have to walk to the premiere or do you think she bought them that way? “Do you have these ones in a muddy cream?” I have a strange feeling that she made them that way. Bought some new shoes, then wore them in some puddles to get a ‘unique’ effect. Helena, if we’re the same size I’ve got some old dirty shoes you can borrow for premieres. Not even borrow, you can just keep them.
But I do love her Queen of Hearts clutch, and she has some hearts on her dress too. This is custom made ‘hot mess’ specifically for the premiere. I’m excited to see what she wears to the next premieres. Love Anne Hathaway & Mia Wasikowska’s dresses. And I have to say that Michael Sheen is really growing on me as an actor.
Stacey: I would love to be a fly on the wall in her seamstresses studio…”She wants me to make what? But she will look like a homeless bag lady. What? Thats the point? Ok, I guess I can make something kinda like that”.
And for the record I love how Johnny Depp dresses…LOVE!

Here’s Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Johnny Depp (below, click it for the larger pic) promoting Alice in Wonderland.I think Helena Bonham Carter might wear old school knickers. Like 1650 style. I really like HBC (heh, that’s Helena Bonham Carter and not Hudson’s Bay Company of course) but I think she might be just a little past “eccentric” and in the realm of “weird”.

Word on the street is that Tim Burton is going to remake Sleeping Beauty – from the perspective of Maleficent (aka the Mistress of All Evil). Cool!! I loves me a good villain and I loves me some Tim Burton so this makes me very, very happy
Although, there is one thing I don’t love about Tim Burton: he uses the same characters over and over and over. Please Tim. Lets shake things up a little this time.
Stacey: This would be, like, the coolest movie of all time. Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney princess and Maleficent is the baddest villain around. Hopefully it will also be in 3D.
Although, he will probably just cast Helena Bonham Carter as Maleficent, which is a little uninspired. Angelica Houston would be the perfect Maleficent. Tall, strong, frightening, and the perfect voice.

A couple of pictures have leaked from the new Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie with Johnny Depp playing the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen.
I love LOVE Johnny and Tim Burton together. They are movie magic; Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood. And Tim did one of my favorite movies ever, Beetle Juice. I am super excited to see this movie.
In other Johnny Depp business, the polls have closed on the greatest Johnny Depp movie ever. And the winner is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, followed by Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands. Good choice, I Smell Smutters!
Tanya: I LOVE Tim Burton, Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham Carter, but I’m getting a little tired of them always being together. Let’s switch things up a little. Have you seen Sweeny Todd? *gag* Creative, but incredibly hard to sit through. I am looking forward to Alice in Wonderland though. I hope Burton does it justice!
Johnny Depp looks like Carrot Top. Gross.
I found some more pics too!
